Chapter 4: Learning Content

Abstract

In this chapter, I invite you to rethink PGCert ‘content’ not as a fixed syllabus to deliver, but as a set of carefully designed inputs and practices that help participants learn through inquiry. Building on the ‘roots‑to‑shoots’ framework, rather than centring  what you teach, I highlight why and how you teach it, with the focus firmly on PGCert participants’ activity rather than PGCert educator delivery. Drawing on cognitive science, sector practices and colleagues’ narratives, I explore how input (knowledge) and practice (repeated application) work together in PGCerts where typically participants can test ideas in their own classrooms. I show how the I.N.C.L.U.S.I.V.E. values can guide content design across six learning lenses: (1) engagement with SoTL, (2) reflection, (3) practice, (4) classroom activities, (5) eportfolio building and (6) mentoring. By the end of the chapter, you will hopefully see PGCert content as a dynamic and values‑driven space for experimentation, reflection and critical inquiry.
