Chapter 3: Learning Context

Abstract

In this chapter, I invite you to look beyond content and assessment and focus on the contextual forces that shape your PGCert. Building on the ‘roots-to-shoots’ framework, I explore how (1) course teams, (2) participants, (3) institutional priorities, (4) learning spaces and resource lists together form a dynamic assemblage that can either constrain or enable meaningful learning. Drawing on literature and colleagues’ narratives, I offer practical ways to scan your context, particularly to understand participants’ evolving academic identities. This will enable you to better align mode, pedagogy and resources. By the end of the chapter, my aim is that you will see context as a designable asset, not just a constraint and feel better equipped to set up your PGCert environment and early engagement so that participants can connect with you and each other and position themselves as change‑making educators within their own contexts.
